  • Time gain / Loss in 24 Hours

I tried to search the forum but not able to find any thread related to this ..... my question here,

what is the amount of time loss or gain in 24 hours for Panerai watches?

Automatic movement : ?? +/- second per day

Hand wound movement : ?? +/- second per day

Does it depend on how you rest your watch? E.g face up / face down ..... ? Perhaps it also model/movement dependent.

Anyone has any info to share here?

If the watch is COSC certified then it should be -4 to +6 a day.

Generally a few seconds are fine.

    How's your watch doing?

Watches like Rolex (COSC certified) is about -4 to +6 a day, and looks like my PAM 233 is doing much better than my Rolex SD. I sync'd it few days ago and now have ~ +3 seconds.

Actually I started love alarm clock before watches from my age 11. About age 12 I bought my first watch Casio used my own pocket money. Every weeks I do setting, double confirm my watch accurate with TV text.. Gila me digital oso I worry, if I think back my past funny. Time goes by I grow up, age 21 thought one Rolex boy but end up santa barbara polo swiss made $342. That's oso I gila if the watch go fast 5 sec I send for servicing, 9 donkeys years.. age 32 thought one Rolex datejust but end up tag happy gila 1 sec a day. Finally age 38, I got my first ever auto watch milgauss GV but 10 sec a day, was under warranty I bought used LNIB. I called RSC kuku asked my GV fast by 10 sec a day is it okey, asked me bring the watch and warranty down for checking. I kuku send lah, collected my gv they said all done in the same time I gain knowledge, Rolex standards (COSC certified) -2sec +6sec a day. go back set time, next day, and next day, and next day, wow not bad at all 3 sec a day. From that moment I got more and more auto watches, swap, flip, buy, sell, trade, lost, and lost, haha. I always thought auto watches accuracy can't be this good but I was wrong by some joker info.. My past Rolex, GMT2C 1 sec a day, Sub HG LB 1 sec a day, Explorer ii 42mm white dial 1 sec a day, Sub HULK 1 sec a day.. present DSSD 2 sec a day... My past watches, Breitling 2 sec a day, omega seamaster co-axial 2 sec a day, all my past 3 ball watches night train, 1 sec a day, steinhart nav b chrono ii, oso run fast by 3 sec a day, power by Valjoux 7750 but don't have (COSC certified).. According to seller the watch was regulate, before was fast by 20 sec a day, sound good gain knowledge. I ever tried send my two pathetic watches for regulate, Hamilton & Helson I informed the watches technician this two watches run fast by 40 sec a day, sadly the reply with pathetic face, is like that want lah auto can't get until 1 or 5 sec a day..

Panerai. I bought my first pam 312, fast by 10 sec a day. I called Richemont enquiry what is panerai in house standard accuracy, they said 10 sec fast a day alamak, I never give up I kuku send my 312 told Richemont my pam go fast lah can help check regulate please. one month letter collected my pam now run 4 sec a day, oso happy lah -2+6 can be consider alright for auto watches but not 15 30 or 40 sec a day, no no not on my wrist...

I happen saw one used jewellery shop at AMK ave 5 around st 52 & 53 if I not wrong, got pam & Rolex poster outside the jewellery shop, I thought sell Rolex & pam I enter lah the shop with my pam, oh this jewellery shop not sell watches the husband watches technician, Cortina Watch X staff, in the same time oso wear 312 hehe. I asked bro my watch run fast 4 sec a day, he reply if your watch under warranty send for free regulate, my reply send liao from 10 sec now 4 sec but I want 1 or 2 sec, he reply no issue can do, wow..

Long story right, my point I don't like people reply, get quartz, you know sound very rude...
Auto watches -2 +6 sec a day not an issues, Time gain more than 10 15 sec can worry, Loss in 24 Hours -10 15 sec a day can worry, send for simple servicing or just regulate will do..

Aslong my toys +2&6 sec a day that's all I need to know...

Thanks for sharing your history ... Very interesting bro and can tell you are so "in" about your watches.

If you still have your Rolex watches with you, try to rest your watch face down, face up, rest it crown down or other way, over night. The watch would gain or loss few seconds ! Not all brand works that way e.g. IWC BP gain about 6 seconds in 24 hours.

              Enjoy .....

I'm also quite OCD about accuracy. I used to sync based on my iPhone clock but I think that can be out by 1 or 2 seconds, depending on one's WIFI connection. I'm currently syncing to time.is

On my 16800 (from 1985), I've found that if i wear it, it loses about 3 seconds per day and it does so for 5 days (Mon - Fri). Then if i leave it flat, it stops losing time.

As i understand it, watches can lose or gain time depending on its position. As one wears it during day to day activities, you tend to develop an average that is unique to you.

So, for me it is -15 secs over 5 days. So what i've done now is sync my watch 15 seconds ahead. As of right now, the 15s gap has been closed to 7s. Did the adjustment last week (don't remember which day) but i didn't wear the watch much over the weekend.

I have non-COSC watches that have been more accurate. A prime example is my Seiko Sumo. Has been pretty much spot on…but then again i don't wear it for more than a day or two at a time.

Yes I fussy about my watch accuracy but I not going to that extent, face down, face up, rest it crown down or other way.. I am fussy but simple only, my way of simple accuracy is, daily beater accuracy, one watch for the example pam 312, working, outing, back home place the watch face up, that's all.. You see next day how many seconds a day, gain or Loss.. my 312 gain 4 sec a day, one month gain 2 minutes sound good right, for the example your daily beater gain or Loss 30 or 40 sec a day, you happy, no right but some ppl no issue like my wife, that's why she always late I so kuku wait lah...

I enjoy reading how you grow up with different time pieces. Really interesting to learn about the possible time accuracy that can be achieved with the mechanical time pieces. I wonder how accurate are the tourbillons. Hope one day you can let us know its accuracy.

Digital & quartz watch oso can't be so accurate, what about mechanical time pieces. Can't be so brilliant but nevertheless, I can't accept if mechanical time pieces so pathetic.. The only difference Digital & quartz cheap to maintain, mechanical time pieces slightly expensive to maintain.. Nevertheless mechanical time pieces can be done with good accuracy, cuz time to time you need to maintain the time accuracy by service...

Generally around COSC standard is good enough.

After all if you rotate your watches, you will be setting the time again.

Also if your watch have no minute markers and no seconds hand, there is no accurate way to tell.

Most accurate watch will be satellite linked watches, tuned to atomic clock.
I use a APP that is linked to atomic clock to set my watch.

Mechanical watches are here to stir emotions, like Art. You expect quality paintings, but not 1000dpi sharpness.
Like wise if i pay 10K, i expect better accuracy than a $300 seiko.

Whilst we would wish that is the case sometimes a $300 Seiko can have better accuracy than a $10k Watch... for a bit more but half the price a Grand Seiko is definitely up there in terms of accuracy...
