Check out ABP straps - huge variety of other exotic leathers/hides too. But might cost you a bomb.

Sorry just saw that you meant local shops only. My bad.

Yes, Alex is right. Panerai alligator is one of the best out there, IMO.

                    So muz be alligator one?

But anyway was told I wash the strap weekly to remove salt crystals then drip n dry

Use water or water with soap & drip and dry so more??
Not sure who suggested to you, that will only shorten the life span of the leather strap.
                      And leave your wallet dry.

Proper leather cleaning method is as below:
To clean leather strap, using leather cleaner which is proper formulated pH for leather.
Normally use a damp sponge or wet cloth , spray 1 or 2 spray of leather cleaner.
Clean the leather strap , then use a clean damp cloth or sponge to clean off the leather cleaning solution.
Normally this will follow up by applying leather conditioner.

If you are looking at quality yet beautifullly crafted straps you should check out this site:

                          http://www.horotomo.com/

Personally got a few from there but importantly the quality and the price is well worth it.
