many watches no box/papers. And those that have, usually cost a bomb. I personally prefer full set, but will settle on watch only provided price is right.

for newer pieces, there are plenty of choices out there with and without papers, so my preference would be to pay a slight premium for a complete set.
for older pieces (10-30yrs old), considering the relative scarcity of certain collectible models, i think having the original paper (while a nice thing) isnt as relevant as having modern service papers (from RSC for instance) since a lot could have happened in the years as the watch changed hands among different owners.
for instance you might never know if owner number 5 replaced original with aftermarket parts at a third party watch-maker etc.
Personally I prefer to buy with original papers (not photocopied ones) and wouldn't mind paying more for the watch. IMO, watches without papers have higher chances of being "laundered" goods. The last thing you want is have RSC confisicate your watch when you send in for servicing on the account that the watch was reported stolen! Then again, some bros also noted that it would be almost impossible for RSC to track every single reported loss...
Anyway, its your hard earned money and its ultimately up to you how much you want to spend.
