am I right in dating the models the following way based on my own observation:-

118238-(double quickset) early 2000s to current day.
    18238--(double quickset) mid 90s to late 90s.
18038--(single quickset (date) late 80s to mid 90s
    1803---(non quickset) early 80s to late 80s.

I read the first DD appeared in 1957, what model was that anyone know?

I believe 1803 is more of 70s to 80s...or earlier. It SHOULD be the earliest DD.

DD 1803 only 35mm compare withe other DD 36mm. 1803 with leather strap selling $5,000 can check different tread.

But the president bracelet is iconic! That's why I buy solid gold

If not I would buy a Submariner or Daytona solid gold with oyster bracelet better

this is the best short and sweet answer I seen, cleared all my doubts thank you!
paiseh lah... just sharing the research I did when shopping for a day date... almost bought a bark finish 18038 until I talked to an uncle at watch shop who convinced me double quickset is the way to go. I also agree 18238 is the best value right now unless one can get a really good deal on a 118238 (the difference is at least 5K), because I think the movement is identical and the changes are more cosmetic... although many have reported that the updated bracelet is far superior than the old one. You can also get a 118238 on an oyster bracelet which is less prone to stretching as opposed to the traditional president bracelet.

Yellow gold = 8 Chinese fav material with chinese fav number...

    Rolex 16233 = TT Datejust...half gold...with a 16233 model number meaning 1 life easy easy ...hehe

I purchased a white gold 2nd hand DD18238 in Jan for $15.5k with diamond markers in good condition.

yellow gold 18238 depending on condition/year/diamonds costs cheaper but I don't think you can get any for less than $10K+++.

I intend to buy YG and RG DD eventually but a lot depends on the stock market

looking at the A1 reply , agree 18238 is the one worth buying if getting 2nd hand DD.

Hi Vince, my own observation of prices between DD 1803 n the 18038 is about around $2 to 3K but suggest you buy 18238 (double quickset).
mine is 18238 and you can set the day and date in a matter of seconds!
Ahhh I see. Yes that's right. 18238 is the ideal watch to buy if you want a DayDate preowned
