  • Trade-In Watches

Hi, wonder if anybody had asked/tried this:

Do our ADs take trade-ins for our old branded watches when we buy their new ones from them?

I think it is a win-win situation for both seller and buyer (of course only if the price is good). Let's share . Thks.

Want them to take back your old watch? CAN, the trade-in price will be a tiny fraction of what you have paid....

      NO.
I have asked several ADs, and all said NO. With one exception. THH does take in, provided the you can find the fella buying preowned watches.

Huh ? Tat serves no purpose isnt it?? If I can find a pre-own buyer myself, then watz te point of trading in wif te AD??? Was thre typo error bro?

The reason for my query is simply that if pre-own shops can do that, why not ADs? To buy and sell, they can make profit(x2), right? Furthermore, they get to sell their new watches faster, right? My concept is similar to the automobile mkt. Car agents like Borneo, Kah, they do that. So do the PIs (parallel importers), right?

If the AD take back your watch @20-30% of your purchase price would you feel offended ?? That is the price the ADs would be comfortable with . Unless a preowned dealer would come in and clarify .

I would not step into an AD who deals with pre-owned . who knows they might pass off a preowned piece for new and i am paying good money for a new piece not preowned . Juz thinking out loud .

Somehow, the AD still has to abide by the prevailing market rate for buying-in price which can be moderated by the pre-own market. I am not too sure about the current rate in the pre-own market but I did make a check with a pre-own ROLEX dealer last year. The dealer (shop in Chinatown) offered a 10% lesser from the buying price if the watch is less than a year old(subject to physical condition of watch).

And if you feel that it is not safe to buy a new watch from an AD that also deals with pre-own watches, what makes you think that you are better off with AD that only carries new? I feel that it is immaterial as in any case, even if an AD only carries new, it can still cheat if they want. There is a reputation at stake. Do you think THG will risk to sell a customer a pre-own ROLEX now, passing it off as BNIB? And will you see THG doing so even if they start to do the pre-own business?

yes. they can do that to customers who dont know much about warranty issues. for people who knows more about warranty issues, usually the warranty cards have date and customer name on it. this provided that all dealers stamp a date and hence the new potential customer will know if it is new or pre-own. however would be a little hard if it is like LNIB pieces with no date and name.

certain brands and/or models have a higher trade in value compared to others. however, if they start to operate with its pre-own section, i think the prices they take in will be lowered compared to those who specialise in pre-own watches. there is a extent where it is win-win situation.

yes, agents will usually accept a pre-own car @ a lowered price compared to PI. however, would you still want to trade with agents or PI?

and yes i would feel offended if my regular AD gives me a quote of my pre-own price @ much lowered price than i get in pre-own shop.

this brings out another point, when buying a watch, it could take up to min 30 mins considered @ that point in time of buying. looking and inspecting the watch, a little chit chat and getting the invoice ready and payment. with the possibility to trade, will the time get longer? will AD be able to cope @ more human traffic outlets? i cannot imagine the waiting time, the amount of customers and worst of, noise level.

Bro, let me correct you... in this case its not THH that takes in preowned... its only that SE...

i know cause I met with him before and he declared that he takes in preowned but not the rest of the SE... maybe he doing sideline... cause when i clarified and asked him aloud that he also takes in preowned, he tells me to tone it down...

maybe all ADs signed an MOU with RSC not to take in preowned to 'preserve' their image....

I think the whole issue whether to take in preowned watch or not is not depend on the AD (AD has NO choice).

Rolex certified their AD with many rules and regulations and AD can't takes in preowned watch is one of those.

                        It just my opinion

thanks for clarifying. The last time I went to ask was about 6mths ago, and yes, only a particular guy did take in preowned pieces.

Though I think my post would be almost the same as the rest...but I will still comment.

It's not a commonly by ADs,and the price they take it would definitely be really low. It works the same as mobile phone ADs wad...like Singtel, they can sell you a PDA phone for 1k and the next week you bring it back to the AD they say they take in $300....u want or not? Might as well go to some ah beng shop outside confirm can get at least $500-600...in this case the ah beng shop outside is equal to our preowned shop dealers.

All in all...dun bother to trade in to AD...

very true if i recall correctly my father got THH to service his watch, by their inhouse techie, who didnt do an excellent job, but quick turnaround.
I suspect THH maybe got open another co. dealing in preowned, behind the scene, that way, they sell you brand new rolex, and refer to their preowned center if you are selling to them
