Your God-mom is RIGHT! When you have the intention to buy, SHOW THEM THE MONEY and expect GOOD service... if no intention to buy, don't act like a KING....

Service is about attiutide or lack off good attiutide to be precise. No matter what a potential customer wears or look, it does not mean he will buy something or not. My God-mom is a real old school lady, whom never buys anything expensive for herself. But I went with her to Sincere & LV about 2 months ago to buy gifts for her kids, she was wearing "auntie" cloths like the ones you see in wet market. When she went in nobody and I mean NOBODY even bother to look at her, it was like she was invisible (I joked with her later that she could swipe a couple of stuff and no one would notice). I was pretty pissed by it and asked her to leave, but her words were "even if they are bad sales stuff, we came all the way here to buy the gifts so don't mind them". Now I have no idea how much she was going to spend, but I did tell her I'll use my credit card first if she need. Her reply was a simple "no need". Choose what she wanted took out a stack of 1K notes and ask the SAs (rather loudly) if she can buy the items. I have to say I have never seen a faster change of attitute in my life.

Final words from her to me was "Money talks, bull**** walks"

    Love the lady

Not to say Im wearing a very expensive watch or what but they know that you like watches and may have potential to buy. So far not too bad but my recent experience of buying the 2 rollies got me thinking.

On 19th Oct 2010, before I start I was wearing my swatch. I was looking around for my deepsea and a datejust for the wifey, so we went to THG at Ngee Ann City, pretty alright la the service, it was a young lady serving me but alas the discount was dismal 5% nia so we thanked her and went on our way. Now we went to ION, the Rolex store near the side entrance, I went in the guy scanned my wrist and didnt say anything but asked how can I help U sir? So I said Im looking for deepsea, whats the price? Immediately he said oh 13413 and NO discount bcos its very popular and everywhere is low on stocks. The watch on display has been reserved and we cannot show you the watch. If you want, we can order for you. So I thanked him and went on my way before arriving at THG Lucky Plaza. The staff there also same pattern, it was only when I said ok I buy this and that, then the service became much better.

Well I guess too many ppl never buy but go inside try this try that and caused the attitude of the staff to become like this but I also feel there are many sales ppl like them who see ppl no up and give attitude.

Just like I have some friends who go around car dealerships on weekends just to test drive cars for fun with no intention of buying, so I can understand from the sales ppl point of view but they should NOT see ppl no up! Thats wrong sales attitude!

Bad service is everywhere. Sometimes I feel that, to get good service, we must be good customers ourselves.
i agree. i feel that many singaporeans are bad customers in the sense that; if they're not buying, they should make it clear and not get the sales person's "hopes" up. many singaporeans act (not just in watch shops) as if everyone else owes them the world. this attitude is not something that can be easily changed. si bei pai kuan.

however in a service/retail sector, sales persons must try to treat everyone as a potential customer - either now or in future. how a sales person "grooms" this potential customer is entirely up to him/her and his fellow colleagues. it's with experience, not through snubbing people, that he/she can tell whether or not that walk-in is a "genuine buyer" -

i have (and i'm sure many others have too) decided to purchase a watch even though it wasn't planned, simply because i was impressed by the sales person's pitch and sincerity.

and if they/he/she gives fantastic service, i'm sure a fair number of singaporeans (such as me) will go back to complete a purchase even if it's a little bit pricier than elsewhere - the result of a weird relationship that was born and cemented during that 15-50mins as a result of good service. this is what differentiates a good and bad sales person.

if they/he/she treats me like dirt or makes me feel lousy about myself... why should i go back? afterall, i'm not being offered the watch on a different profit margin!

I hope you are not in front line retail, seriously!!!
Haha, bro, definately not. But I do have a few frds with ADs from THG and others. Some of them are retired, they shared with me their experiences, so thats y ...So depends how we see things.

    Gents & Ladies,

I believe that we should be good customers (as in not giving sales stuff a hard time over things they can't control). However even if a walk in customer is only browsing, how would you know if browsing will not turn into buying?

I still remember going into THG at ngee ann when I was a boy, just to check out what watch I want (aunt's graduation gift). Even though I was a young boy, the stuff there was showing me different watches and even bother to explain the basics and cost. That to be is a priceless service.

i walked in after a long day at work in berms, crocs and a short sleeved shirt (i just changed my pants and shoes and left office).

initially nobody wanted to serve me. this lady was trying to get far far away from me and asked a young looking employee to tend to me.

once he saw my wife's reverso (she dresses very simply), his attitude changed. the lady also quickly came back to join in when she realized what watch i was wearing.

i left as quickly as i came in because i wanted to buy a white gold sub but they had no stock (i took a quick look at the WG DD-2 also). it wasn't a good experience, but it wasn't bad either.

however, i'm sure if i went in wearing a casio calculator watch, i'm not gonna be impressed...

I had 2 bad experiences with cortina raffles city previously, can feel kanna scanned .... nowadays on and off i will walk in and scan them back. Agreed that the outlet at millenia walk is quite like the opposite though.

But seriously the service level needs to be improved.

    Cheers
