                Just my own opinion;

                1. A Lange- cos of its design
                2. Jaeger Lecoultre- cos of its many in-house movement
                3. Moser & Cie- cos of its rarity
                4. Glashutte Original- cos of the beautiful see thru back
                5. Blancpain- cos it never made a quartz watch
                6. Breguet- cos some mad Frenchman called Napoleon was its customer
                7. IWC- cos of its simple but yet straightforward name
                8. Longines- cos of its rich heritage
                9. Ulysse Nardin- cos of its unique name
                10. Azimuth- cos I love my country!!

What makes a great watch ?

                My take

                1. Heritage
                2. Discerning design
                3. Non-commercialised/non-main stream

I am just not a fan of a commercialised watch
I rather push my Alfa Romeo than drive a BMW

                Alfa 1.5 Sprint
                Alfa 33
                Alfa 147
                Alfa GT
                Alfa Spider 3.2 V6- now
                Alfa 4C- maybe next time

I love your reasoning behind Azimuth! Hahaha! Here is my top 10!:

1.Patek - Because it is the definition of a high-end watch (at least for the general public) I am in no way discrediting them for that!
                  2. Vacheron Constantin - Long long heritage and history behind it, complication capability
                  3. Jaeger-LeCoultre - Great in house movement! I'm aiming for a JLC (hopefull soon)
                  4. Girard-Perregaux - In my opinion is slightly underrated. Great brand, great movement with great design!
                  5. Rolex - Though a mainstream brand for luxury watch, they measure up to their reputation!
                  6. A.Lange & Sohne - One of the best German watches and also because it is difficult to pronounce =x
                  7. Audemars Piguet - I find their watch don't appeal to me aesthetically. But I can't discredit their quality and heritage!
                  8. Zenith - Long repuration too. The fact that LVMH owns it doesn't really help, does it?
                  9. Richard Mille - Stylish, too stylish for me in fact. Yet, not compromising on their movements.
                  10. CASIO - For the mere fact that you see them everywhere! You've got to respect the brand, or at least the company!

                    1. PP - tradition and design
                    2. FPJ - design and innovation+ and without losing the traditional design elements of a watch
                    3. AP - a good mix of familiar conservatism and modern styling (in different ranges)
                    4. VC - tradition and design, but loses points for not going free-sprung throughout
                    5. JLC - great all rounder
                    6. AL&S - probably the best of the German makes, but loses points for heavy reliance on Richemont siblings (eg JLC big date), not going free-sprung over the range and the cosmetic screwed balances. No issue for me with its age.
                    7. GO - its big date is the best out there and great design balance and proportions
                    8. Rolex - great brand recognition and tough construction make it from a great daily beater/tool watch to a more special treat
                    9. Omega - surely the best bang for buck chronograph out there
                    10. MB&F - pushing the boundaries

Special mention for the small independents like PD, KV, VH, RG, RS, PSM for keeping the traditional methods in traditional workshops more or less alive. Special kudos to RS on this count...

Just Rolex and Breitling for me

The rest are marketing gimmicks! No offence to other folks.

all brands use some form of gimmicks every now and then
its a matter of how much they do it
nevertheless, gimmicks aside, some brands that i like for their design and heritage:
                          rolex, breitling, omega, panerai, AP
                          btw i prefer diving watches
dont have much feel for top tiers like PP, JLC, FPJ, VC, A. Lange & Sohne - could be too dressy for my liking
