  • Job: aeronautical engineer

    Hi guys,

I am not sure if this is appropriate to be posted here.
Just wanna ask whats the general lifestyle of an aero engineer and also the prospects.
    Government/private?
    Pros and cons?

    thanks in advance,

    Nic

    The prospect is ...

Fix salary, low annual increment, super heavy responsibilities.

No such things as commissions, tips, petrol allowances, no sudden jump of pay, you work gradually up the ladder which takes years or may never happen at all.

A chef or a taxi driver earns more than you as a junior engineer plus more freedom.

Not forgetting you work round the clock, weird shift patterns, spend less time with your family.

Last but not least... no chance of getting sex for contract, not even oral job in your car

Engineers here in SG get paid crap..... in Aussie you'll finish Uni, go work in a mine in Western Australia, and your pay is in excess of AUD $120K per annum !!!

( take up mining engineering and go work there !! )

I think aeronautical engineering is too specialized. In the future when u go into other engineering, ur degree n experience will not be of much help to secure a higher pay position.

I dun believe dfive said about 120k aud per yr for mine engineering. Yea u can get 10k per mth when u climb up the ladder but definitely not. Within 2 yrs after graduate.

Sg is considered a good place to grow ur career with a degree loh. Purchasing power so much higher compare to neighboring countries n income tax is not that high compare to other countries.

Consider switching major if u still can. I have a HK friend who enrolled in aerospace engineering but switched to mechanical engi within a few quarters after being admitted to an american uni cus he realized that being a non-american citizen, aerospace engi will give him very limited opportunity to grow. He later on transfered to berkeley uni and graduate with 3.9 cgpa out of 4

              Hi bro, thanks for suggestions.
Actually I really like aeroplanes that's why I'm choosing this course.
I have been offered mech engineering but personally I'd rather do aero.
              Too specialised meaning?

TS, no worries. What you study now does not equal to what jobs you will working in future.

These days a psychology degree can end up in manufacturing, an economics degree doesn't gtd you to be an economist.
Ntu Engineering degree end up be HR manager.
I had seen so much cases where the jobs people go into are some what not related to their degree as a matter of fact.

In today context is very common.

Mining should be still hot on Aussie I think.

Generally Singapore wages are lower compared to other first worlds at the lower levels.
Eg accountants, engineers, analysts, programmers etc

Singapore is the top choice for expats thought.

Many people does work in lines unrelated to their line of study.

Ts, if u really like aircrafts, then do u dream of becoming a commercial plane pilot 1 day? If u want, my advice is try to be involved in plane exhibition, workshop n better still, junior flying club n learn to fly.

After u graduate, apply for cadet pilot opening (currently sia has temporarily put their cadet pilot hiring process on hold n no idea when will resume hiring, average 120 cadet pilots hired per yr by sia).

U need to show sia that u r interested in flying n what u have done to pursue ur dream. I went for the interview twice but didnt get selected cus my passion n resume was not enuf to impress the interviewers (just telling them that u like to fly, u want to fly is not enuf to convince them).

                          Good luck in ur studies

I used to think about being a pilot. But my motion sickness is extremely serious. Per say if I play some computer games, I will get giddy and vomit just after 30 mins. So I kinda given up on flying and moving towards engineering sector instead.
                            Thanks for advice given!
