with the recent protests and coup, the number of tourists to bangkok has dropped ... should be able to bargain harder in places e.g., MBK. I know because i am still travelling there for work.

For Bkk, it's a must to go to platinum mall. U can find everything there. Don't need to go chatuchak. It's so hot! Normally I stay at BUDACCO hotel. It's some kind of boutique hotel. Security guard very on. There also a gd massage beside the hotel.
