    Personally, I prefer 42mm/44mm.

It really depends on the brands. For more classic brands, e.g. Patek, VC and Lange, their watches don't look good being big for the sake of being big. Likewise, the 40mm PAM just doesn't have the feel of a PAM.

Simple. Becos 39 to 40 is considered classic size.
In fact to be more accurate 36mm to 40mm is classic size (mens)
Anything bigger was made as a fashion statement or a trend.
Anything that is just fashion or trend does not last.
Thats why 36mm to 40mm are the favored sizes amongst aficionados.

This does not only apply to watches but everything in life.
Classic stuff may not always be in but they will never be out

Watches are very personal, and so happens a lot of great brand or models are of that size or even smaller.
