What's the diff between a 2012 sub and a AN Series sub?

Hi, can people advise what's the different between a 2012 sub and a AN series submariner?

I thought 2012 is AN series.

"a 2012 sub" may be used to refer to the Sub model that is most current. Or it may mean to describe the production year of a Submariner.

"a AN series submariner" just means a Submariner that has an alpha-numeric (AN) serial no. It is not indicative how old the watch is or which particular year it was produced because the AN serial nos. started sometime in 2010/2011 till now.

Icic... So meaning anytime after 2011 thereafter, all sub should be AN series.

Not totally. There's the G series too.

The watch may be G or AN depending on where it was purchased. Some ADs take longer to sell G than others, so a G-series sold by them in 2011 may have the same 'vintage' as an AN-series sold by other ADs. Not sure if there are G-series submariners in 2012, though (perhaps one can find a G-series Explorer or Explorer 2 that has its cert dated 2012).
