By the way, think the price of watches will keep increasing. That is basically economics; inflation. A 3 room 30 years ago only cost S$18k and today, its worth S$280k. as long as its an asset, ie, gold, silver... the price will only keep increasing. Thinking would it be possible to ask the technicians or workers at rolex to be paid based on the rates 30 years ago? don't think its possible. so all in all, i still believe that price of all these luxury items will get more expensive as the days pass so as to maintained their status as "luxury" goods... anything is possible. When i asked my mum, can she imagine that her flat which cost her only S$18k 30 years ago would be worth S$280k today? don't think she can comprehend, not even myself. that is like 15X increase. lets be conservative and say maybe the prices of rolex will go up by 5 times in the coming 30 years (new watch) since they are increasing prices every year and this in turn will push up the prices on the resale mkt.
got my 14060M in 2003 for about 4k, today, pre own mkt is about the same price for the same watch.
Just sharing thoughts and opinions for discussion, no hard feelings.... by the way, i am no watch expert...
Coming back to the topic of Omega vs Rolex... I don't think we can simply compare them this way. Rolex sells on Tradition and Omega sells on Trendiness. I have 2 Rollies (TTGMTIIC , Explorer 2 polar) and 2 Omegas (Speedy and Aqua Terra)... my preference is still to wear my Omegas as I find the Omega bracelets much more solid and comfortable to wear.
Having said that both are quality luxury watches, each with more than a century of history behind them... no point deliberating which is better.
P/s : I have recently removed a link from my speedy at swatch group service centre and even got them to polish a scratch for free. My suggestion is to go there during the non-peak hours.
btw, anybody have pics for the 'sea hum'... sounds very singaporean... wahaha
still prefer rolex though... own 11 rolexes and only 1 omega.... but omega is really a value for money watch. think different target group maybe... as nobody has ever claimed rolex to be value for money i guess
To be more pointed about my point, I'm suggesting to bro Ian that the Datejust seems more like the flagship rolex worn by leaders captains etc [/QUOTE]
Hello Bro,for past 50 years Rolex called the Day Date their flagship and "Leader's Watch" for the elite. I didn't invent the terms.
Nicknamed "President" because it was worn by WW2 Commander of all US forces and later 34th President of the US-Dwight D. Eisenhower.
see their latest website also state "The Day Date" "The Leader's Watch"
in this case , the flagship means something like the signature product of rolex, the model that represents the Rolex brand, the most prominent Rolex watch etc.
(Ok I OT a bit...)
Yes I know, and it is in the context of this interpretation that I pondered the meaning of flagship. There was a thread in WUS/G-shock about the flagship G-shock - different brands yes, but the differing perspectives on flagships are interesting
The term flagship is also used to describe the top or main vehicle manufactured by automotive marque. These vehicles are usually, but not always, the most expensive, prestigious and largest vehicles in the line-up. The term is most often applied to sedans and usually only those manufactured by luxury automobile marques.
While the flagship is always the most prestigious vehicle in a company's line-up, it may not always be the most expensive, or the largest. The Lincoln Town Car, for example, while considered the flagship of the Lincoln division[citation needed], ranges roughly $6,000 below the Navigator in price. In the case of Cadillac the DTS flagship sedan is not only priced roughly $11,000 below the Escalade but it is also smaller, in terms of overall length and width, than the Escalade ESV.
The term "halo car" is often used in automotive marketing and journalism to refer to the flagship vehicle. The term is derived from the halo effect, the tendency for a favorable trait to influence the perception of subsequent traits in a sequence of interpretations; it appears to have been used as early as 1938.[4]
For me there can be only 1 ....aka the "King" ,aka the "President"....the Rolex Oyster Perpetual DAY DATE.
Flagship of Rolex for more than 50 years ,worn by the leaders and captains of every Industry from US Presidents to CEOs of MNCs to Mafia Bosses, this is a leader's watch

i'm not a watch tech... just a watch lover and collector.
actually... not really a "collector" anymore: i wear only one rolex watch now, day in day out - very unlikely i will "upgrade" or change it.
at the rate watches are selling for these days, i don't feel i should spend my money on them anymore...
i mean, more and more fashion houses are paying companies to come up with "in house watches" for them... are they truly a manufacture as claimed? or is it simply more marketing BS?
(look at tag heuer's latest "in house" 1887 calibre that turned out to be a seiko movement!)
what about omega's 8500 calibre? how much help did they get from ETA? what about longine's new chronograph? again, ETA came to the rescue. all companies under swatch group are helping each other to make very unimpressive improvements and jacking up prices along the way.
next let's think about a used uboat watch i recently saw FS... giant stainless steel case with a generic movement and a mineral crystal glass. asking price? SG$3k! you must be kidding!!!
and then we have two local champions who got a german watch firm to design their watches, then contract the manufacturing out to a swiss firm, and in the end stick ridiculous RRP on their product... with names like "CARROT HEAD" and "SEA HUM" (i kid you not!!!!)
and finally we have rolex. forever price increase. what is the (horological) world coming to? will a rolex sub cost our children $30k in future?
for now, i'm putting my money aside and when the property prices is right, i'm going in again. my trusty old submariner will be with me the whole way.
in my safe deposit box i have a YG day date, a basic patek calatrava dress watch, a vintage seiko column wheel chrono and a lemania 5100 chrono set aside.
they remind me of a time when watches were fun, well priced, and well made. most importantly, those pieces remind me that in the past, what you pay is what you get!
oooh oooh i saw the "SEA HUM"! I actually thought it was a nice looking watch until i saw SEA HUM on the dial. Sure it's a diver, but to name it after a cockle? Heehee..
Wow Bro Taxico.. I'm impress by your speech. Well said.
Uboat is a huge watch with small movt inside.. No way they r better than Omega. I have 3 pams n 2 omega though..But still feel Omega movt r better than my pam, except for my 233.
Either u read alot o u a watch techican i guess? Of course Rolex is highly recognised in terms of movt.

I would rate rolex service standards way lower than seiko.. at least seiko treats ur $150 watch with respect and return it to u without any scratches..
rolex service centre treats ur watch like some pasar malam watches..put deep scratches into ur new watches when u bring it in for warrenty claims..
personally, i had one bad experience with the singapore seiko SC (thong sia). i brought a semi-rare 10 year old kinetic GMT watch (titanium) to them to upgrade capacitor and service everything.
as i was not in the country, someone picked the watch up for me. the lady at the ground level counter threw my watch onto the table, then opened up the packet and asked if it was the correct watch.
when my friend complained, the lady's supervisor just laughed it off. TMD...
