I have a GMT master 2 (pepsi) bot in 1999 and I have been wearing it daily as it was my only watch till this year. till now it has kept time really well. I recently bought the new explorer 2 as I am convinced of the brand's quality and reliability. I bought a new watch cos I want to keep my gmt master 2 for posterity. I am betting my money that this explorer 2 will be as good, as hardy.

I think good mechnical watches should at least last a generation (maybe 50years)

Regular servicing and replacement with original parts (say about once in 5 years) will restore your Rolex's time-keeping accuracy within COSC standards and maintain its value. 20-25 years from now, when you give the watch to your son/daughter, you'll be proud that the watch is an item of value, and that's long after you have forgotten the costs of servicing.. so you are not just passing down your surname, but also a valuable piece of heritage!

And to answer your question, Yes, I have a GMT Master that still runs reasonably accurately even though it hasn't been serviced for about 22 years, but it's well-kept..

I know a Rolex collector from the US who has 2 dozen Rollies from the 1940s (World War 2 era) to the 1960s and all are in working condition.

My favorite Rose Gold Day Date from 1960s (50 years old) is still running perfectly so I think these watches may last "perpetually".

there was a sales person who told me that after servicing of a rolex watch, the warranty runs for another 2yrs, is this true?
After a full overhaul service, meaning you have to replace parts that the RSC technician (who inspected and quoted you on the service/repair charges) said must be replaced, then the watch will carry another 2 years international warranty. It's stated in the service manual that comes with the watch. However, if you don't replace parts that the technician said are faulty, then there's no warranty performance for those un-replaced parts. For eg., if the main movement weight is worn and have to be replaced (at a cost), the will be NO warranty on the time-keeping accuracy (COSC stds) if you don't it.. Likewise, if the caseback showed signs of corrosion, and it wasn't replaced, then the RSC will not do a water-resistance test and there's no warranty on water-resistance for the watch. The overhaul servicing costs, which is a lump sum with a FOC polishing, will include free replacement of springbars, links screws, gaskets, and other minor parts.. So it's a good idea to send the watch for servicing at the RSC once in a few years! Just my 2 cents!
