  • Rolex Explorer II 16570

    Hi All,

    Need your advise.
Since Rolex Explorer II 16570 have been discontinued, if I were to get a 2nd hand, how will it affect the value?

    Thanks

Pardon me but I don't quite understand what you are trying to find out

Do you mean 'affect the value' of the current sale price from pre owned watch dealers/shops? Or do you mean value of the watch when you decide to sell it off later??

As it is now, the general price range is rather visible in the garage sales sections. Whether it will hold value well or appreciate/depreciate in the long run I am not sure.

      Hi,

What I meant is the value of the watch when you decide to sell it off later?

As it is now, based on the history of the Explorer II, with the exception of the "Steve McQueen" model (Ref. 1655), the Explorer II (16570) was never known to be one in high demand. Of course, no one can predict the future, but I wouldn't bet on it at this point.

In fact, it is one of the (or has been) less expensive ROLEX sports models you can buy in the pre owned watch market.

generally all rolex will be able to hold it value right?
Is there any rolex that has no value? If let say, I bought it as $5k, it should still have a value of $4k after some year right?

Yes and no. Some ROLEX watch models have a certain value in them, not all. There are many, many contributing factors to how much this so-called 'value' is. Some models have better resale value than others. Some models you can hardly (re)sell them off unless they are very low in price.

Referring to your example, you may not even be able to re-sell the watch at 4K, depending on the model you are re-selling. For example, if the 5K watch you bought is a Datejust or Oyster Perpetual, to re-sell it at 4K after some years may be difficult. On the other hand, if the 5K watch is an Explorer I/II, you may be able to re-sell it at 4K years down the road, but this has to take into consideration the watch condition, what accessories are accompanying the resale, the demand for it at the point of resale, etc.

IIRC, at one point not too long ago, the Explorer I (114270) was selling as high as 8K; the Daytona (116520) was selling as high as over 20K. Do you see these kind of prices now?

Imagine yourself to have bought an 8K Explorer I then. Do you think there's good resale value now? What if you have bought a 20K black Daytona that time? Can you sell now at a good resale value?

Try to read up more in the forum and you will slowly understand

Some (price) samplings from the Garage Watch Sections

(for this series, the retail price from local AD at that time was about 8K+)

And pls do note that those prices are what the sellers are selling. I am sure the previous owners of those watches would have sold the watches to the sellers at a much lower price (if the sellers themselves aren't the owners).
