  • Which would you prefer; Rolex Sea Dweller or new Datejust II 41mm

Dear members, a question I wanted to throw out there; the new Datejust II (41mm), especially in black, seems to get pretty close to the submariner / seadweller models. Okay, it is not as waterproof, but I rarely get below 100 meter under water anyway and wear the watch most to the office. Therefore the question, which would you prefer?

I tried the DJ2 recently and felt that the 41mm is excessive to be a dress watch. Somehow the bulk makes it feel awkward between the dress watch series and sports series, like having an identity crisis. Maybe it's just me that doesnt have much positive vibes.

Boutique owner was trying to push this piece to me, saying that the first year release is always good for collection.

One is a dressy/formal (DJ2) while the other a sports/diver (DSSD) watch, so its like apple vs. pear. Really depends on individual preference & daily activities. If u hardly do water sports/diving & mostly spend time indoors/office, then DJ2 makes more sense. If u r a sporty person who frequents diving/swimming, etc, then the DSSD would b the choice!

Are we referring to sea dweller or deepsea? Both are sports watches but sea dweller is 40mm that can be worn as dress watch. Deepsea is too huge as a dress watch and not suited for those with small wrists. Both can my votes over DJ. Rolex sports model is always more sought after. Just my 2 cents.

For my lifestyle, I would prefer dj2.
And I'm very small size, the dSSd make me very awkward. Like wearing baggy jeans. Not my style.

If I have other choice, I would go for submariner

Find the 41mm DJ2 a tad big and awkward sized, jus loses its proportions vs the 36mm DJ. So will go with the DSSD.

Based solely on looks,my vote goes to DJ2.
Main reason is DSSD is just too chunky and its bracelet is too small for the big casing, whereas DJ2 is more proportional.
I will choose neither given a choice :P

Let's be frank. No one goes beyond 50m unless you are a professional diver. Heck, most diving enthusiasts rarely go beyond 100 ft or 30m. Most divers will also not used their beloved expensive >$10k when they dive or as a tool watch. Unless you are either a pro or damn rich. So DSSD is usually for show only.

Yes, the DSSD is an over engineered watch, and that accounts for its thickness. But it's my choice over the DJ2 which is cross between a sports watch due to its oyster bracelet and a dress watch.

I would prefer sea dweller. Just personal preference.
Just another small small small small watch user ....
