  • Should I be flattered or.........

A customer visited me yesterday for a project and showed me a Facebook photo of a box. He enquired if I had made it.

I was surprised that it has a similar design as the one pictured below.

I have put it up for sale here in this forum. See post.

Here’s the photo of the ‘replica’ box in his facebook.

I am flattered that this guy admits my design is good by copying it wholesale but am also hurt to see such a box on sale here in this forum with a copied design. This person doesn’t know the time and effort I went through to design and make my products. I know a box is a box but the functionality itself was a product of several days of brain-wreaking not counting the time, effort and wasted materials I’ve spent making several prototypes.

This person, I know, has a day job and selling watches & whatnots as sideline whereas I’m struggling and solely depending on this for a living. I hope this person reads this and truly respect what I do as a craftsman. Please don’t do this to me.

    Thanks for viewing.

Different quality lah bro ten10.... yours is 10/10 standard while the other is only 3/10.....

Design can be copied but Craftsmanship not so easy to copy. In today's market, you cant stop people copying you.... but you can beat them by staying few steps ahead.

You are very strong in designing functionality, customising to customer's needs, and highly skilled in producing high quality products, coupled with good customer service & your sincerity..... these are traits that are hard to copy.

Talk about box..... I was actually thinking of asking you to do another box....
        I'm in bad company........

As they say..."Imitation is the best form of flattery". But unacceptable nonetheless if people will profit out of it. You have my support bro ten10. Maybel you should start thinking of having your designs patented? not sure what the process is like or will it be practical to do, but you can check out www.ipos.gov.sg.

Ten10, don worry, we will continue to support you. If anyone is looking for such a design, I will direct it to you instead of the person who copied the box and sell it.

We know who did the original design.

Talking about being "thick-skinned", this is an example of thick-skinned... (with reference to the watch flipping thread..)

I feel sorry for bro ten10, for having to put up with this kind of ordeal....
