  • Buying Pre-own as gift

Just curious, what do you guys think of buying pre-owned watches as gifts? How would you feel as a receiver/giver?

Personally I will avoid doing that because I'm afraid it would come off as insincere. But I know there are some poeple who are ok with it. What are your comments on this?

Alright for me, what's wrong with that.

For example, if your wife giver you receiver, item brand new TAG heuer aquaracer quartz or one year old used ROLEX GMT2C, your wife ask you, which one yeah you want my darling, so which one you take, do back to your wife test market, which one she will take. My friend she had hard time looking for the best husband gift, cuz she not rich, she bought used 6694 full set for husband gift, husband happy like crazy. Funny husband got 6 new model watches Pam and Rolex, how come this used 6694 he happy like crazy, I had small talk to him and asked what make him so happy, cuz you got better watches, he told me that not about used items all about love and gift.

i avoid preown watches as a gift. what if the watch later has some technical issues? i would rather buy brand new to avoid complications.

I have given and received preowned pieces.
Depends on the giver and receipent eg if I am buying for a client, how can give preowned???
Also the nature of the watch eg if it is a vintage piece, how to get brand new?

IMO, giving a pre-owned/used item (be it a watch or other items) as a gift to anyone isn't appropriate. Whether the receiver minds or not is another thing. Citing Mr clocking's example, if my wife/husband/mother/father/brother/sister/3rd auntie/6th uncle..... wants to buy me a gift between choice of a brand new Bossini shirt and a "worn once only" PoloralphLauren shirt, I'd choose the former.

It really depends on the reciepient that you are presenting this gift to.
There is no right of wrong to this question, for the receipiant of the gift
usually it is not the gift but rather the thought that counts sort to speak..
Even If you just reciept a very nicely made stuff doll made from a your old socks( sock already washed.... hahaha) from your 5 year old duaghter as a birthday gift, now you would really really mind?

              Just food for thought

It really depends on the contextual reasons for the gift, the type of gift and the receipent.
For personal items like clothes, new is preferred. For watches or rare objects, pre-owned with pre-knowledge is ok. Generally, it will be good to communicate in advance that the intended gift is pre-owned. Afterall, you do not want the fact that it is pre-owned to sour the intention of the gift.

I personally feel that it is better to stick to brand new items for gifts to play it safe. Even though as watch collectors/traders many of us don't mind getting a pre-owned piece of our favorite watch, many of those who are not watch collectors might find it offensive to receive a pre-owned piece as a gift, especially girls!!

the first Rolex I got was a boy size half gold fluted bezel no date... a gift from my uncle, it was pre-owned, without box n papers...

the first Rolex I bought for my wife was a pre-owned manual winding one, no box no papers

the first Rolex I bought for myself was a sub from a pawnshop, no box no papers...

the above 3 events are fondly remembered... and will always be remembered... and would definitely want to add one more of such event for my son, and it will never matter if it's pre-owned or brand new...

                    it's ROLEX

It is the heart thats matters, not the value. Back to basic..

If the conditions are correct, having a preown or new is the same to me. To be honest, material value weighs lesser than the true joy of giving and receiving.

It's just a gift. It's the thought that counts
