What watch will you buy for your child?

If he/she asks me "papa, I want a submariner" when he/she is at P5, I will buy for him....

I am sure he/she will not.... how many kids want a Rolex than toys???

I think a rolex at 21 is still too young and they may not understand nor place a good worth on it due to their immaturity.

I have seen a rich indonesian boy at P5 (though 12 years old) wear a submariner.....

I think that is RIDICULOUS!

Child should learn to earn his own keep.

Saying that though, i may get a Rolex for his/her wedding - a defining moment of maturity...

Should u still need an answer for child:
Primary school - swatch
Secondary school - Timex/Seiko
Tertiary - Seiko
Graduation - Max i will give is a Tag Heuer or a BALL watch... something that he will learn from before moving on to other watches

This is potentially an issue for the school. If the submariner goes missing, the parent will come make a scene. Another danger is the child may be mugged if he walks out of school.

Same as reason schools do not allow students to wear jewelry.

My daughter's kindergarten asked her to stop wearing her flik flak to school also.

I will still buy them one when they are still a kid if I can afford, keep it as like new condition till their 21years old birthday. Very meaningful when they see the watch is born same year same date..

I have bad experience giving my younger bro relatively expensive watch as a gift. Kids rarely can take care of luxury, they can go missing/lend it to their friends and in the end doesn't sound good at all.... Save yourself and give something practical.

This is my recommendation: you can cultivate reading "analog" watch from young. Quartz will do no harm. Perhaps start with a Swatch or Seiko? Alternatively, a Casio is not a bad choice either. Water resistancy is a big bonus, something rugged.... not hard/expensive to replace.

Kids don't know how to take care of Rolex? Aiya, a gift is a gift... give already is his/hers... they can damage it, lend it to friends, throw it away.... up to them.... gone will not buy again that's it.... if cherrish nice nice, more to come....

You know, I agree with some bros here that perhaps, rolex may not be a good idea, even if money is not the issue. I mean, Rolex is supposed to be 'a crown for every achievement' right? If we take the true spirit of Rolex, it should be earned and acquired yourself, ideally when you achieve something significant - at least, that's what the founder intended. So unless my child scored first in university, no rolex ! It seems like it's not worth buying something expensive for them till at least college or university. Ok save the money for myself. Will get a nice pen for my child instead!

Agree. Those that they earn it, they will cherish it more. But I will still give something to my girls when they reach 18 or 21 out of love. It need not be a watch if watches does not rock their boat.

A Seiko, Casio or Swatch.

For a high-end watch, he/she will have to earn it, just like me.

But i will give him/her my watch.

But seriously, I think I will leave it to my child to decide what to wear during the school days, kids may like to follow trends, enjoy changing watches etc, like I did when I was in school....but I think I have my mind set on a Rolex for the 21st birthday present (unless something else is requested by the child)

Great idea. Indeed very meaningful and full of sentimental value.

My 2c would be keeping the watch till son/daughter enters workforce. At 21 you'd still be a student, and the value of it may not kick in then. But once you're working for your own $$, and you realise the effort someone took to spend that kind of $$ for something he or she would never use, but instead kept it aside just for you... I think that means alot. It'd mean alot to me, that's for sure.

I prefer to gift them watches than pieces from my meagre collection....afterall i still treasure my grandfather 1803 although i dun wear it at all...just keep it in safe and service it regularly....wind the beauty once in 2 weeks....
