    30% of Penang Hokkien vocabulary consist of borrowed words..with a majority from the Malay language. it's distinctly South East Asian.

    Mandarin was never our mother tongue for us southern chinese.
    I totally agree. The best part was while they speak mandarin throughout, but when they sing their songs, they do it in malay.

    when they were showing "the little nyonya" on tv, all the time i was thinking "waht a load of bullsh*t! since when did Peranakans of that era knows how to speak Mandarin?

    If your parents/grandparents are from a certain area of china, like my dad. The hokkien tends to be more taiwan. As for me, my mum is from taiwan, so i can speak tai yu in the type of tone the taiwanese do.

    My dad is Shanghainese.
    My mum is Peranakan Hokkien.
    My wife is Teochew.

    I can speak English, Mandarin, Malay, Baba Malay, Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew.

    parent speak broken hokkien and broken mandarin... grand parent speak mandarin and hokkien...

    me, speak bahasa and english only last time never learn, never though will end up in singapore for career wise.
