  • Help me choose a dress watch - JLC or IWC?

Usually I know what I want but here goes my first help-me-choose-a-watch thread

Trying to settle on a dress watch which must be of white dial and at least 40mm. Torn between JLC (Reverso or Master Control series) and IWC Portuguese (3714 or 5001).

Which brand or watch will you choose, if value-for-money is an important factor? A $10K watch with complications and inhouse movement can be more value-for-money than a $5K watch that offers basic function and basic ETA movement and sell mainly on its brand, just to give an example.

And it does matter that the watch looks good on me, of course

Personally, I'll choose IWC Portuguese 3714 which certainly look for classy as a dress watch...

Audemars Piguet Ball Bell&Ross Cartier IWC Longines Omega Panerai Rolex Sinn Tissot

            Alba Casio Citizen Roox Seiko

Tks all for the recommendations. Have tried on 5001 at the AD, it's really thick...as thick as the histroric PAM I think.

personally i would say the JLC Master Control series will be a better choice.

i would personally give the 3714 as it does not have the 'dress' feel. I would not go for the 5001 either as it is more towards the sports weekend casual.

Can't bear to put my money in a RG/WG/YG watch...the difference between the gold and SS version can buy another watch liao :P

4 vs 3 so far in favour of IWC.

                      Any more opinions, please...

While JLCs are certainly more dressy, the IWCs are a tad more versatile and can be worn as a sporty piece or casual weekend gathering. The Portuguese may be iconic but don't forget that IWC has a nice, dressy looking Portofino range at a comfortable price also. Current Portofino iterations at 39mm, new version I heard will be bigger.

Yeah, saw that IWC is coming out with many new models for the Portuguese and Portofino series. Not aware that the Portofino range have a "comfortable price", will check them out.

                          Thanks for the pointer bro!
