my 2cents worth: not everything is based cosmetics. i supposed for a delicate object like a mechanical watch to be working under extreme conditions, there are engineering designs and mechanisms in place to make it possible. Try imagine a submarine, with max depth limit of 1000m, was asking to go to 4000m for some seabed exploration. It will be a one-way trip. The end-result of such engineering consideration is the form that you see today.
