frankly, i suggest u just go for the one u really like... just save up a bit more if it's above current budget. you're going to be wearing the watch everyday and it has to sing to you... why compromise and go for 3rd or 4th best?
regarding the term 'worthwhile', i guess you're talking about resale price? for most modern rolex, the discontinued sports model tend to hold prices pretty well. for newly released models, if really popular like deep-blue a few years back, the resale prices during initial launch was crazy, but as supply kicks in or when a new variant or novelty replaces, resale softens... a good example is the original all-black deepsea which has dropped around 1/3 since initial launch price.
some models however are still going strong, e.g. hulk, batman... but i guess it's a matter of time.
my 2 cents.

I've never really been a fan of watches with white faces, but recently the Explorer II has been catching my eye, and interestingly I seem to favour the white face more than the black!

I feel explorer 2C the best.. Handsome and cheapest among sport models.

Airking is not cheap. Going around $6k for an entry level model is high price to me. If you compare with explorer 1 or 2, and datejust 2, in term of percentage, airking is overpriced in my opinion.
