    Not a GMT 2 expert but i'll take a guess here...

    Word has it that tritium was banned in 1998 and replaced by luminova in 1999, so this watch has got to be pre-1999.
    The 16710 was introduced after 1988, that makes the watch in Qs produced between 1989 to 1998. Now, he says his dad bought it 8 to 10 years ago, making this watch falling between 1998 to 2000. Now, as i've said, no tritium dials after 1998, so that makes this possibly either an early A, U, late T or even a late W series 16710 watch. Darn Rollie serials, only they can find logic in the sequence used.

    I think it is the links that is making the sound as it will loosen over time. Hold all the link in your hand tightly (not loose) and shake the watch. If no sound, it means your links are making the sound. My GMT I also make this sound if shake with the bracelet holding loosely but when I grasped the bracelet tightly, no sound.
