  • Thanks for your thoughts.
I have sent vintage rolex to RSC for authentication before and I was told that they email/send info of the watch to Switzerland as part of the authentication work. I was also told that they send the serial number to see if it matches the model. I wonder if Rolex headquarter do keep all the records of watches produced.

There are stipulated dimensions they measure for everything (case, crystal, bezel, crown, bracelet, dial and hands) with very tight tolerances, but these will only be done if they have any reason to doubt authenticity. When you give them a vintage rolex/tudor for authentication, expect to have tiny toolmarks around the lugholes and underneath the lugs, where they use sharp calipers to make measurements. Sadly, even then they are still not 100% correct. Refinished dials and relumed hands and aftermarket inserts have passed through RSC Singapore before, and the authenticity receipt gives zero description of any part that may not be original/authentic.

IMO, you are better off with doing research and comparing visually with known examples of the genuine blue snowflake then sending to RSC. Or go with a trusted watchmaker who can open up the case and provide opinion based on servicing hundreds of these watches if it is indeed authentic.

          • Hi experts,

With all the appreciation abt vintage Rolexes, does it mean that our current modern Rolexes eg sub LV, will eventually become vintage value 20 years down the road with patina markers and faded bezel?

Of course, for those pple who can't wait, will have to fork out the premium for vintage pieces now

"Vintage value" Despite common belief, there is no direct co-relation between vintage and value of a watch. There are many other factors that influence the value of a preowned watch, vintage or not.

Also, The word vintage has been quite loosely used especially when comes to collectible items like watches. My understanding is that the word vintage is originally used to refer to wine, and later also used to refer to item that is of a certain era or period of time (e.g. an vintage 1960's COMEX Sea-Dweller) rather than of a certain age. These days, it is generally acceptable to refer to watches older than 20 years as vintage watches. A nicer name for old, preowned watches

Firstly, I think it is a common misconception that vintage pieces command a premium over their modern counterparts. Consider the modern GMT versus a vintage 1675 GMT - the outright prices paid are higher for the modern than for the vintage, all things being equal (no fade, no tropical, no patina). Same goes for a 114060 versus a 5513, or a 116610 versus a 1680.

Secondly, modern collectible pieces with superluminova such as the 16610LV will never, ever, exhibit any kind of patina on the markers like the radium and tritium dials of old. It is also exceedingly unlikely any of these modern pieces will ever turn tropical. You will see values go up as less and less of these are readily found, especially if discontinued, but IMO they are unlikely to scale the same heights as really vintage pieces such as the big crowns or the bakelites. Of course, the inserts can still fade but likely never have the same demand as say an evenly faded, gunmetal grey plexi sub insert with pearl.

Lastly, please don't worry about values in 20 years time or what the next buyer may pay for your watch. Buy what you like and wear in good health. End-of-story.

You can't wait for vintage, only vintage can wait for you.
