    Hello all,

I got a Oysterdate from my grandpa. Now it is not working anymore. I wonder if the local rolex service center will help to service it? And anyone got any idea how much it would cost now for the very old rolex?

My father remembers from 1970 it was about S$400. If you go to the national archives website, you can now do a search for old newspaper ads from the 1960s ... I think some have prices. i saw a few printed out as wallpaper at the museum ... and one ad featured the submariner 5508 I think.

          FYI, from this thread - a 5513 was US$235 in 1969 and a 5512 was US$265.
          http://forums.watchuseek.com/f23/how...-a-525038.html

          Using the inflation calculator,
          http://www.westegg.com/inflation/
          ... a new 14060M today should be: US$1305 and a 116610 should be about US$1470.

          Go figure.

          On another note...
Just as interestingly, I read somewhere that for a typical rolex customer, their basic Datejust and sports models will be priced at about 7.5% of your annual salary. This theorises that Rolex expects you to save a year to buy your first rolex... possibly to celebrate some life-event.

In Singapore today, for a typical PMEB who buys a rolex (i.e. has worked between 8-15 years) and who wants to "crown" some sort of achievement in their life , that means a new datejust 116234 or Submariner 116710 should be about S$10,000 +/- . That seems to be approximately correct ... and in part probably accounts for their prices being adjusted every year or so, even as your pay-packets are adjusted every year or so!

FYI - one of rolex's traditional tag-lines is "A crown for every achievement" ... and unlike what a lot of people think, their brand-positioning is actually "Affordable luxury". That's why ... surprise, surprise ... Rolex has traditionally seen Omega as their competitor, and not the boutique brands like PP, AP, VC etc.
