pilotsnoopy, sad to say that your mentality will change once you see old people opening up trash bins, and trying to collect tin cans...

i was once like you. a patriot and a guy who loves his country.

i understand how you feel, im now in the dark side because ive seen far too much in our country.

in singapore, EVERYTHING looks nice from outside. the inside is another issue altogether....

the elite family eats, drinks and dines on elite food. they have a big car.

my family, slaves for them the whole day, and me & my son is in charge of guarding the elite family. we get illtreated and we're 3rd class people.

the elite family makes life difficult for us, everything we own is theirs.

          one day, robbers come.

what will you do? as simple as that.

          1) bring your slave family and flee from elite family's house.
          2) guard the elite family's house and might survive, and slave family continually get ill-treated.
          3) guard the elite family house and die, lagi worse.

          which would you pick?

          I agree with Andrew.

Some of the comments here suggest I am an elite whom do not know the realities and the hardships of the less privileged in Singapore.

I am certainly not one, at best I will say I am upper middle class, a class which is still pretty much sandwiched.

Mille, like Andrew said...opening trash bins, collecting tin cans cardboxes are not limited to senior citizens in Singapore.
Have you ever wondered what led them to it? Regular cleaning/waiting jobs taken by labor from China? Why so? just because foreign labor is cheaper? Not always. You should also see how our own senior citizens refuse to help themselves. Let's say at a food court, you see grumpy old men and old ladies employed as cleaners shouting vulgarities at fellow colleagues, boasting about their own children trying to outdo...or should i say outboast each other...and most of the time their children are not very filial either seeing how their parents behaved when they were younger. They are old, physically they cannot take standing walking around all day, on weekends public holidays they want their day off. As a supervisor/boss of these employees, how much more are you willing to help a person whom do not help themselves? Compared to a foreign labor whom has the 'hunger' the willingless to do overtime, take on shifts on weekends public holidays, someone whom is willing to help him/herself.

In foreign countries, you see more people...old and YOUNG...picking thru rubbish to make ends meet...Inside and outside? I have lived in Chicago, Houston, New York, Copenhagen, London for periods longer than a tourist and seen the insides. You see young people from rural areas of bigger countries coming into these cities trying to make it, making many compromises...doing their own chores paying their own rent. You see some whom have given up, picking thru rubbish sleeping in smelly subway stations. What does the typical young Singaporean have to deal with back home? Not happy quit the job, go back to his/her parents house? Some lucky enough have parents whom will spoil pamper them with Evos/WRX/BMWs...Crash the car...insurance NCB is parent's anyway...some lucky enough family buy them another car till they kill some taxi driver or car salesgirl.

Mille, you say this "i was once like you. a patriot and a guy who loves his country.

i understand how you feel, im now in the dark side because ive seen far too much in our country."

I was and I am still a patriot and a guy whom loves his country despite seeing and experiencing the 'dark sides' you have mentioned.

As a kid, my old man had a good engineering business, played out by...EDB, Sembcorp...cos apparently in the 80s...the government still do not believe local people besides scholars handed taxpayer's money can do it well. With this 'mandate', screw IP rights...they went on accomplish some half f project and move on to the next stat board. and this still happens right now in 2009 with a friend's listed company, scholar wants to make his report card look good...propose...carry it out for a year or 2...move on to his next post and screw the last post and its responsibilities commitments he made.

I know this, because I met many Singaporeans abroad as well. We went to a Contact Singapore event in North America, hoping that things have changed for the better. There the Ambassador, Perm Secretary and others like EDB, Spring Singapore lobbied many to go back or seek opportunities with the civil service. At the end of the event, we were disappointed, screw the local food they provided...we went off and had our own mini gathering and discussions. Let the less privileged or lesser exposed guys/girls undergrads have their talk with them. We were and are still better off contributing to Singapore in our own ways in the private sector.

Do we love our country any less? No.

The dark side...lol...have you seen the darker side?

it's not whether i am doing well or not doing well, it's just that there are too many machineries in sg which makes us slave workers.

our hdb/car/cpf - 3 of our most important financial assets in life - yes - who does it belong to??

it's pent up frustration, about things happening around us which we can't control.

take the latest increment of hawker rental, or even the cpf medishield fiasco - for a sickly girl.

admitedly no country's gahment is perfect - but i have problems accepting a gahment which knows its lapses - but does almost nothing to rectify it.

so i am not sure why mille is so unhappy with his life. but i know nooch aka dan and i can understand his frustration.....but we communicate thru pm already.
I'm just amused by Mille's assertion there are things that is out of his control...but I feel it is really up to the person to adapt and find ways around problems. No blame can be attributed to say the Government entirely.
