Yeap, it's worldwide as Nooch mentioned. Well, stars like Josh Hartnett, Arnie, Russell Crowe, Pierce Brosnan, Hugh Grant and even Bill Clinton wear Panerai. Catch Rambo 4 and u'll see a rare sought after PVD panerai.

Go China and u'll see the Ah Tiongs crazy over Panerai. There's even a special edition exclusively-made-for-ah-tiongs chinese zodiac series. Think about it, if it's not gaining exponential popularity, do u think Richemont can do a 2-times price increase every year? My agent at Sincere even told me that this year, due to the demand boom... price increase might even go 3X.

Expected expensive is 1 thing, but can even grap hold of one if produced only say 1000 pieces worldwide?

I inderstand that Panerai was made famous by "Rocky" Slyvester Salone, he bought them very cheap those days, think maybe like $500.00 each. Panerai was unknown just like Seiko, Citizen...with his large purchase give away news got out the watch became a celebrity over night. Prices also shot up, sky rocketing.

Like many, I started off with Rolexes, and branched out to look into other brands.

Panerais never appealed to me initially. Thought they look real wierd and chunky. By the time you start to understand Pams, you'll appreciate them. Once you get hold of a piece, you'll start to get crazy liao.

I've been quite attracted to the Panerai designs these last few days ... but I don't understand the pricing.

Many of the pieces - limited production yes, but hardly vintage or rare - sell for $8-15k and upwards.

Technically,
1) many use base ebauche movements from unitas or valjoux ...
2) many movements have slower beat rates than rolex e.g. 21800 bpm ...
3) use 316L steel cases rather than 4x more expensive 904 grade steel...
4) mostly steel, with a sliver of white gold on the hands (some models) ...
5) use leather straps rather than metal bracelets, which at least to me, appear cheaper ...

... what makes it even as good a buy as rolex ?

Rolex already seems pricey for what it is ... panerai strikes me as seriously overpriced ...

if you wear TT DJ will be better then a YG DD, unless you are willing to splurge on WG DD, that may *just* blend in with your age. the president bracelet put a few years to anyone .... i wore my dad DD, and people think i was a father and my father the ah kong. honestly, people think i easily 30 *piangz*

Based on current market sentiments, it's about S$18k iirc for the PAM187.

I think the new rolex SD-DS will retail for about S$14,000 before discount.

And yes, I think this panny is much prettier - the DS is butt ugly.

That said, can the panny dive to 12,000ft ??

I think they are pretty watches and maybe I'll go lookout for an RXW or Marina Militare. Unless I find a panny for under $5k, I think its bit much for me given its specs. At $15-20k I'm beginning to think of patek phillipe already... although its a completely different type of watch.
