  • alphabet series vs alphanumeric series

since beginning 2010, rolex changed the traditional alphabet naming series (alphabet followed by 6 digit) to alphanumeric series (comprise of 8 random alphanumeric characters). however G series were spotted sometime from mid june 2010 onwards.

however, J series starting with J part of the alphanumeric series. i would say the J series is a alphanumeric series because total characters is 8 rather than 7

why did rolex introduce the G series again despite previous many people saying that V would be the last alphabet series?

i have some conspiracy theories. first, the G series cases are already done. they will finish the stock of those cases bearing G. this would make the V series not that collectible especially for models that still have G series.

what are you views and opinions. would like to hear what other forum members think.

will there be new alphabet series coming along? i shall wait and see

Whether V or G is the last alphabet series, I don't see them as more collectible than other series.

Well, going by your theory, the last all-numeric series (i.e the 9 millions series) should also become collectible, but they didn't. There are so many changes in the history of rolex watches that are deemed collectible by the so called collectors, but what are truly collectible are those that are rare. The definition of "rare" is subjective, but a whole series of watches that spread across all models are just too many/common to be considered rare/collectible.

I wouldn't even call them "special" just because they are the last of the alphabet series :P

Alphanumeric need not be newer than G series..alphanumeric came out first but it's still being circulated

Sorry, a bit off topic here.

More collectible or not, I think it's really subjective. With this kind of production numbers, I highly doubt that current Rolex sport series will repeat the same glory as the era pre-1990s.

Where's that Comex DeepSea Seadweller/Comex Ceramic Sub? If this one comes into fruition, it will be a different kind of ballgame altogether.

To me, I will buy a modern Rolex sport series because:
                1. It is still value for money
                2. It looks good and I like the design.

Simple as that. Did not and do not expect they will become collectibles.

after V series, alphanumeric series was the replacement. however, G series appeared after launching of alphanumeric. so from one perspective it is between V and G. but not totally.

                          G series vs alphanumeric

This time got a birthday present from wifey a Sub-C.

However, was surprised that few days back we were at THG and saw a alphanumeric series, was told by AD that it is the new 2011 model. But it was sold the day after.

After two days, my wife called up all THG branches and there was only 1 Sub-C left. She bought it immediately and I realised it is a G series (2010 model?).

MY question is: since the Sub C is so hot, why is a G series still available? Any guru can advise? My concern is if this is a left over stock due to some defect, how else will a Sub C be left unsold for over 1 year? Whereas the alpha numeric was snapped up in a day.

HI thanks. You mean Rolex factory only released 1 yr after manufacture? But i have seen a few alphanumeric series in THG also. Just find it baffling that THG sells the new ones before clearing off the old stock. Sorry didn't quite get you, what can I check with RSC with the serial number?

I am no expert. I saw the latest 42mm explorer 2 in G series too. Hence, I believe alphanumeric and G series are manufactured the same year e.g. 2011. Thks.
